Our Departmental Profile

The Facilities Management and Development Department at SUNY Downstate Medical Center is comprised of a diverse group of multitalented individuals with backgrounds ranging in Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical Design, Project Management, Code Compliance, Environmental Health and Safety, and Building Services. Our highly diverse background is a major reason why our department is uniquely qualified to handle requests for services internally. Our main office is located in the Basic Science Building room1-15.

Our Responsibility

Facilities Management & Development is responsible for the overall maintenance and operation of all SUNY Downstate Medical Center buildings and grounds which totals in excess of 2,500,000 gross square feet. The department is subdivided into four primary divisions:Physical Plant, Design and Construction, Environmental Health & Safety.

We take tremendous pride in continuously maintaining the highest standards possible in providing a safe, comfortable, and clean environment for all staff, students, patients, and faculty at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Campus Construction Activity Updates:
3 / 12 / 2018

  • OGS Emergency Repair Project - UHB & BSB
    • Starting on the evening on March 16th through the 18th – (over the course of the weekend) Crews will be working in the UHB 6th floor Research wing and the north/south UHB corridors (West of Elevators 2&3) removing damaged VAT floor tiles. The Contractor will also be removing asbestos containing "ACM" insulation in the 1st floor cafeteria ceiling. Please note that Occupants and Staff will not be able to gain access into their offices or other affected areas during the work at least until clearances are provided.
  • Fuel Cell Installation - Bloom Energy
    • The Contractor will proceed this week with heavy activity on the UHB Building's exterior. Anticipate heavy machine noise while the Contractor pierces through the building's foundation wall.
  • 14B17 Boiler Replacement Project
    • The new Boiler Equipment has arrived last week allowing the contractor to increase their efforts in connecting this new equipment. Some sporadic noise will be heard from the BSB Basement area as the bulk of the pipe-fitting installation continues.
  • 14496-00 BSB HVAC Upgrade Project DLAR
    • Crews continue working this week inside each of the Mechanical room equipment spaces of the East, West and 6th Floor Chiller plant areas with heavy activity. Occasional heavy machine noise may be heard as the new generator is being tested to be put on line.
  • 14496-02 BSB Stacks Replacement Project
    • Contractor crews are continuing their efforts working on the BSB roof connecting mechanical systems towards their permanent locations. Contractor's employees will continue to access BSB Elevator 16 sporadically.

  • Develop methods for campus communications on facilities projects and deferred maintenance problems and issues.
  • Enhance tools to track, measure and report on facilities management for this Campus.
  • Improve the project delivery system within Design and Construction Unit and associated support services.
  • Enhance the safety of the Plant Utility area, staff properly per regulations, reducing staff burnout.
  • Define proper facilities staffing for an institution of this size complexity and niche service ( peer institutions and assoc.)
  • Ensure staff are properly trained, have tools, equipment and operating systems to perform work efficiently and effectively to meet the mission and goals of the Campus.
